Concrete breakout resistance (EN)

In anchor design, one of the critical code checks is the concrete breakout resistance. According to EN 1992-4, this must be verified under tension, shear, and combined loading. IDEA StatiCa allows engineers to select which resistance checks to include in the analysis.

Activating or deactivating specific concrete breakout checks helps focus the design on the governing failure mode. For anchors loaded primarily in tension or shear, the non-critical check can be omitted to simplify the analysis. If reinforcement is provided to carry either the tensile or shear forces, the corresponding concrete breakout check can be safely deactivated.

You can disable the concrete breakout resistance check in the Project settings and choose from the following options:

  • Both - Both tension and shear forces are considered in the code-check.
  • Tension - Only tension forces are considered, with shear forces assumed to be carried by reinforcement.
  • Shear - Only shear forces are considered, with tension forces assumed to be carried by reinforcement.
  • None - All forces are assumed to be carried by reinforcement.

The table below summarizes which verifications are performed depending on the selected setting for Post-installed anchors:
