AISC Seismic Weld Access Holes

Dieser Artikel ist auch verfügbar in:
Automated design of weld access holes according to the AISC Seismic Design Manual or AWS D1.8/D1.8M. This feature defines an optimal geometry that strictly fulfills code requirements.

Following the logic of Weld sizing and Autodesign of bolts, this feature represents the next step in automating connection design. It streamlines the Opening – notch operation by replacing the manual iterative search for proper geometry with an instant solution. Note that the algorithm checks the access hole strictly against the selected standard (AISC or AWS), not both simultaneously.

In IDEA StatiCa Connection, in Seismic design geometry with AISC Design code, there are two types of access hole autodesign:

  • by the AISC Seismic Design Manual or
  • by AWS D1.8 - 6.11.1.2

The function is fully compatible with the Opening – notch operation.

How to call the functions

Autodesign can be called by:

  • Ribbon command inside the Operations dialog
  • Context menu (right-click) on the Opening – notch operation

Autodesign by AISC Seismic Design Manual

The Autodesign algorithm first reads the beam flange thickness and material properties from the property grid. Based on this input, it determines the specific type (A-N) according to the Seismic Design Manual tables. It then applies a specific rounding rule: 1 mm for metric settings and 1/32 in for imperial settings. Using these parameters, the algorithm automatically pre-designs the access hole.

After that operation, the connection meets the prequalification limits from AISC 358 and 341 Standards.

Autodesign by AWS D1.8/D1.8M: Chapter 6.11.1.2

The algorithm of Autodesign is strictly based on formulas in AWS D1.8/D1.8M, figure 6.2:

1 - Bevel as required for the WPS.

2 - tbf (thickness of beam flange) or 1/2 in [12 mm], whichever is larger (+1/2 tbf, or -1/4 tbf).

3 - The minimum dimension shall be 3/4 tbf, or 3/4 in [20 mm], whichever is greater. The maximum dimension shall be tbf (+1/4 in [6 mm]).

4 - 3/8 in [10 mm] minimum radius (-0, +unlimited).

5 - 3 tbf (±1/2 in [12 mm]).

6 - see 6.11.2.1 for surface roughness requirements. This is a fabrication requirement ensuring the cut quality; it is not geometrically represented in the 3D model

7 - Tolerance shall not accumulate to the extent that the angle of the access hole cut to the flange surface exceeds 25°.

Note: Although the Opening – notch operation direct settings are not provided for the parameters (e.g., 2, 3, 5...) shown in the figure above, their verification is performed in the background using trigonometric functions.
